With the development of education taking place in Qatar, it is essential to to have an idea about standards-based education. When surfing the net, I came across the following PPt presentation that gives a clear idea about such a kind of education and its advantages. It also draw’s attention to the design of unit plans and how the implementation of effective unit of study design can maximize students’ learning. The presentation also clarifies the characteristics of standards-based classroom where the focus is always on students’ learning. Effectiveness of instructional practices is measured by student progress toward meeting the learning standards and objectives. I’d better not go deep into the details of the presentation so as to give you the chance to do this yourselves and discover things for yourselves.
Now, I leave you with the presentation to benefit from the information presented about standards-based education.http://www.authorstream.com/player.swf?p=Milasunshine-68879-curriculum-planning-pedagogical-system-curricular-design-unit-plan-designppp-entertainment-ppt-powerpoint
Education in Qatar, like in all other countries of the world, is of great importance for the welfare of all people. It plays a great role in our life as, in fact, it affects all other aspects of man’s life like, his knowledge, his career and his lifestyle. Because of this, all religions have emphasized the importance of education; The Holy Bible says in Hosea 4:6 that “my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”. To seek knowledge is something obligatory for every Muslim. The first word revealed of the Qur’an was “Iqra” meaning “READ a call for people to seek knowledge, educate themselves and be educated.A person without knowledge is like someone walking along a track in complete darkness.
Education in Qatar has passed through a number of stages. First, it used to be in mosques or in religious schools called “Kuttabs“. That was followed later by a more comprehensive form of learning that went beyond religious teaching. All the schools were run by the Ministry of Education. Very recently, HH the Emir has called upon a comprehensive reform in education so as to cope with the international standards and to improve the quality of education and graduates.
The system of education in Qatar has recently gone through some changes based on turning public schools into independent schools that follow international curriculum standards. The main aim behind this has been to improve the quality of public education. These schools run under the supervision of the Supreme Education Council. Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad President of the University of Qatar said, “The initiative to reform the education system in Qatar was not an overnight decision.” However, some people think that it was all done in a hurry. Other people would like to send their children to Independent Schools but there are no seats available. It’s really a controversial issue.
The last stage in the process of Education reform took place when HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a few weeks ago, issued Emiri decision No. 14 of 2009 organizing the Supreme Education Council. The decisions streamline the organizational structure of the council, and identify its goals and objectives. This decision ensures that all the Ministry of Education services will be rendered to the Supreme Education Council, eliminating the old system and starting a new era. I think the new system should be given the chance for some years and then it has to be thoroughly evaluated. We should all participate in the success of the new system of education to achieve the expected results of improving the quality of both education and graduates to be able to cope with the international development.
